Latest news from Zinal Sunday January 13th Another big dump of snow fell yesterday in Zinal, on top of what were already near perfect conditions. All looks set to be an excellent season! Saturday 17th November Season opened today with snow everywhere and sun shining. Lets hope it continues. Only four weeks are left unbooked now : Dec 8th to 22nd and March 1st to 15th. Thursday September 27th First snow of the season has fallen, and still lying on Saturday at 2400m.Let's hope this is a good omen. Wednesday September 19th Official opening dates announced. The season will start Dec 8th this year and in addition the lifts will be open at weekends from November 10th. They are obviously confident of early snow this year! There is an International Children's downhill ski race organised for December 8/9th. The season closes earlier than expected on April 6th. Sunday April 15th Sadly the last day of the season,. Conditions have been pretty good right up to the end of the season, and considering the lack of snow generally in the Alps this year, particularly in December, conditions have been remarkably good all season. Roll on summer. Sunday 18th March Just back from a fantastic weeks skiing. Snow was perfect all week and the sun shone every day. All the pistes were powdery all week except for the one run down to the resort which was slushy below 1900m. Our friends were all very impressed by there first trip to Zinal, and all want to go back next year. Tuesday 27th February Its been snowing heavily again and there is more forecast. About 30 cm has fallen on the pistes in the last two days. Monday 26th February Article published in Fall-line Skiing magazine describes Zinal as "one of the last great undiscovered ski spots". Zinal, they say, "is the new freeride destination", with "exceptional skiing" but "without the crowds that usually spoil anywhere that earns a freeride reputation". A "picture postcard snowy village that looks like Christmas all season long". Tuesday 13th February 40cm of fresh snow fallen at the top and 20cm in the village during the last 24 hours and still snowing! Sat 27th Sun 28th January Mauler cup took place in Zinal this weekend. A two day paragliding 'touch and go' competition with 80 pilots from all over the world. Pilots fly with skis and have to touch the mountain on various marked target areas near the pistes as they descend. It makes paragliding more of a spectator sport and drew some crowds to Zinal. Tuesday 23 January About 40 to 60 cm of fresh snow has fallen on the pistes in the last 36 hours. Sunday 14 January Busy weekend in Zinal due to Swiss ski competition relocated to here at the last minute from the Portes du Soleil, due to the lack of snow there and the good quality snow in Zinal. We could do with some more but there is a foot of snow outside the apartment still and people are skiing down past the apartment today. Thursday 4 January 2007 New snow at last. About 35cm of new snow fell on 1st and 2nd of January. Snow condition now excellent. 18 out of 21 lifts in Zinal and Grimentz open. Monday 25 December New snowpark opened today just above the Sorebois restaurant in Zinal. Lots of brand new rail slides and some big jumps immediately attracted some impressive freestyle boarders and skiers. Friday 22 to Monday 25 Dec Blue skies all day everyday. Excellent skiing on pistes. Perfect paragliding conditions. All photos on this page taken this week. Friday 22/ Sat 23 Dec FIS (mens under 23 years) slalom competition took place here in Zinal. Course conditions described as best of the season so far. Saturday 16 Dec First day of season. 18 out of 21 lifts in Zinal and Grimentz open. Snow conditions excellent on pistes. Wed 13 Dec The brand new state of the art snow making system started working today in Zinal and Grimentz. There are 5 kilometers of pistes in Zinal and 6 kilometers in Grimentz that now have snow cannons installed. This guarantees fresh snow even |
